Reaction vs. Action: Choosing Intentionality Over Impulse

We all have bad days. Every human experiences them. Even the best person will occasionally be overwhelmed by parts of their life. Why bring it up? Mostly, as an example. When we have these bad days, most of us inevitably end up becoming very reactive.

What is it to be reactive? If you’ve read some of our earlier editions, you may have heard me mention my inner toddler before. It’s a lot like that. It’s the parts of us that take over (often without our desire or sometimes even knowledge) when we get frustrated. It’s that curse word muttered, the door slammed shut, the scream inside your car with the windows rolled up. It’s the reason Dave and Jim almost came to blows over what should’ve been an easy resolution in the checkout line.

It's reacting to situations without thinking from an unhealed place.

So… we have reactive… what’s its opposite counterpart? Response. What does response look like? Interactions based on responses are well thought out and come from a place of control and often compassion. It takes away the sense of being attacked by taking things personally.

It’s having a strong enough sense of self not to let much throw you off your ability to think rationally.

Much like anything, bridging the gap from one point to the next is a process. There’s no magic button or switch. It takes work, being uncomfortable at times, and the courage to evolve not despite the uncomfortable feeling, but because of it.

I can’t tell you what your journey will look like. I can only offer insight from my own. Somewhere along the way, I realized that the way I handled things wasn’t working for me. It wasn’t authentic. How I felt wasn’t how I felt. Then I set off to figure out why. The first step I took was my most difficult one. I stopped lying to myself. Like, about everything. Once I traversed that minefield, something else became apparent. I had zero emotional intelligence. My emotions ran the show—not from a healthy place, but from one that reacted before I could even think. Learning emotional intelligence wasn’t easy. It took a lot of hard work. The peace that I found at the end was the prize. Sometimes, it’s about having enough, making an active choice, and holding yourself accountable to it.

Am I perfect now? Nope. Am I “healed”? No, but I remain in an active healing state. I now see healing as I see learning, a perpetual opportunity for growth that only enhances.
